Traveling is one of my favorite ways to discover myself. While it’s fun to escape and get a much-needed adventure, your skin can face a few challenges while you’re off your beaten path.
While I hate to admit it, travel can take a toll on my complexion. And in true “wander nature,” I want to focus on my adventures, not what’s happening with my skin. I have a classic t-zone oily complexion, so balancing the oily parts and moisturizing my cheeks and lips is a challenge when I travel.

Beauty Tips to Care for Your Skin When Traveling
Let’s dive into how you can keep your skin happy and glowing, whether you’re lounging by the beach, hiking a mountain, or hitting the pavement for a run in a new city.
Daily Skin Care for Travel Agendas
Travel light, but don’t skip the basics. Get travel-sized bottles of your favorite beauty routine products to keep your skin care routine on point.
Here are the skin care must-haves that won’t weigh down your bag:
- Cleanser: Go for something gentle that works for any skin type, like a mild foaming or solid cleanser. If limiting your liquids is a challenge, check out cleansing wipes. I like these from CeraVe (plus they’re compostable for a sustainable option). Pair it with a hydrating toner since your skin can feel drier post-flight.
- Moisturizer: Pack a small container of your moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated when you’re on the go. You can always refill it with your full-size container. My go-to moisturizer is the It Confidence in a Cream moisturizer. It’s a creamy moisturizer, great for winter and summer use.
- Sunscreen: Make sure you pack a travel-sized SPF 30 or higher. If you can pack a tinted sunscreen, it could double as a foundation (check out this one from LaRoche Posay).
- Shampoo and Conditioner: It’s nice to bring your own in small travel bottles since hotel brands can interfere with your hair’s natural balance. Consider packing a travel-size dry shampoo for updates in a pinch!
- Travel Oral Care Items: Pack smaller versions of your dental care like a travel toothbrush or a travel-size water flosser, for when you’re on the go. Travel oral hygiene products are also perfect for your gym bag after a run. Get tips for runners’ oral hygiene here.

Best Skin Care for All Climates
Every place has its own unique impact on your skin, so adapting to the climate is key:
Skin Care Tips for Hot and Humid Weather
- Use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer to keep pores clear.
- Reapply sunscreen every couple of hours, especially if you’re out in the sun.
- Consider blotting papers or powder if your skin tends to get shiny.

Cold and Dry Climate Skin Care Tips
- Pack a rich moisturizer for hydration.
- Consider a creamy moisturizer for your body to combat the dryness of colder temps. Check the label for hyaluronic acid to ensure added moisturizing ingredients for your skin.
- Don’t forget an extra-thick lip balm and maybe a moisturizing mask for nights.

Skin Care Routines for High Altitudes
- High altitudes mean stronger UV exposure, so up your SPF game. Keep in mind the reflection from snow or water can amplify UV rays, so sunscreen is key. My favorite sunscreen is Sun Bum, they have travel sizes for your suitcase!
- Bring hydrating products to help with both cold air and UV rays when visiting high altitudes.
- Use a good barrier cream, like Aquaphor, if your skin is sensitive to altitude changes.

Stay Hydrated for Skin That Glows
Skin hydration is an inside-out deal, so staying hydrated is a must:
- Drink Water: Carry a water bottle and keep sipping, especially if you’re flying. Airplane cabins are dry and deplete your skin of moisture.
- Snack on Hydrating Foods: Reach for fruits like watermelon and cucumber. They hydrate and give your skin a glow.
- Be Mindful of Caffeine and Alcohol: They’re dehydrating, so if you indulge, balance it out with water and a good moisturizer.
Skin Care While On the Move
Plane cabins are dry, and that can leave your skin feeling parched. In addition to drinking plenty of water on your flight, keep your skin hydrated with these skin care products.
Here’s a simple skin care routine to keep skin fresh on long flights:
- Cleanse: Use a face wipe or micellar water to remove makeup and freshen up, especially for long-haul flights or international travel.
- Moisturizer: Pack a travel-size moisturizer to seal in hydration during the flight. You can always reuse your small-sized bottles and jars if they’re under the 3oz limit.
- SPF: Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays should be a priority. Even if you’re spending an extended amount of time on a flight, you should still wear SPF for the time you’re on your way to the airport and after arrival.
- Eye Mask: Flights are a great time to pamper yourself. I love adding under-eye masks to hydrate my under-eyes and feel refreshed. These under-eye masks from grace & Stella are so refreshing!
- Rest: Get plenty of rest either on your flight or at your destination. Jet lag can have a huge impact on your complexion!

Time-Saving Skin Care for Women on the Move
For those whirlwind trips when every minute counts, here are some quick tips to balance your skin:
- Choose Multipurpose Skincare Products: Products that combine SPF and moisturizer or a BB or CC cream with SPF are lifesavers.
- Stick to Basics: Cleanser, moisturizer, skin creams, hydration products, and SPF are key! Keep it simple and don’t overpack.
- Pamper Yourself: Moisturizing sheet masks or eye patches are a great way to sneak in some TLC for your skin without taking up much room.
- Adapt to Your Skin Type: If your skin is dry, bring something richer; if you’re oily, pack a gel-based product and blotting sheets to help with oil control.
Travel Skin Care Frequently Asked Questions
Stick to essentials to ensure you have everything you need without overpacking. Focus on skin care items like cleanser, moisturizer, a sunscreen product, and makeup basics.
Include a few high-impact makeup products as part of your travel skin care routine. Items like concealer, lip gloss, mascara, and eyebrow pencil can go a long way!
Airplane cabins have low humidity and can dry out your skin. Also when traveling to new climates, the change in environment can dry out your skin and cause irritation.
Stick to familiar products when traveling. This isn’t the time to try something new! Keep your skin hydrated on your flight to help keep your skin balanced between the flight and the new climate.
