While traveling can be exciting, it can also be a huge disruption to a fitness routine. Your schedule is off or you’re likely in another time zone (or country). Having a travel workout plan for getting your activity on vacation (or traveling for business) is the key to success.

Running on Vacation Can Be Fun

Traveling is one of life’s great joys, but it can also disrupt your fitness routine. Whether you’re basking on a beach or rushing through a work trip, staying active can enhance your travel experience. Here are some practical tips to help you keep fit while exploring new destinations.

One of my favorite parts of traveling is working out on vacation. Going to a new destination and getting to see the sights while I am running is a cool way to explore a new city. If you’re staying in a hotel, ask the concierge for suggestions for running routes or plan your running route based on hot spots nearby.

Best Reason to Run on Vacation

And I love traveling for races (or as Brian calls them, “business trips”). While you may not always get to squeeze in a local race while you’re in a new place, there are other ways to add physical activity to your vacation plans.

In addition to running on your vacation, here are ways to keep active while traveling and stay on track for your running goals.

Pack Smart: Fitness Gear Essentials

If you don’t have a gym at your destination, that’s okay! There are a few essential travel workout equipment pieces you can pack and to ensure you’re staying on track for your fitness goals. These items are small, lightweight and can fit in any carry-on or checked bag.

Items to Bring for Vacation Workouts

Consider bringing the following exercise items with you:

  • Resistance Bands: Lightweight and compact, resistance bands are perfect for strength training (traveling or at home). I have this set at home, available on Amazon.
  • Jump Rope: This simple item from your childhood can provide excellent cardio when you’re on the road. It takes up very little room in your suitcase and provides an excellent workout.
  • Running Shoes: Not only for workouts but also great for long walks while sightseeing. If you need new running shoes, I recommend going to your local running store (mine is Fleet Feet Chicago) to get properly fit.

These items will allow you to exercise no matter where you are and no gym is required.

Best Ways to Incorporate Activity Into Your Vacation

If you can’t necessarily run on your vacation, there are ways to get time on your feet. You can explore your destination actively without scheduling formal workout sessions. Depending on your destination, try taking public transportation to add additional steps (and you can see the local fare too).

Fitness Options on Vacation

Here are some fun ways to keep moving while on vacation.

  • Walking Tours: Instead of taxis or buses opt for walking tours to explore the city while burning calories. These are also great for local tours too. Also, have you tried Evidation? It’s an app that rewards your activities with gift cards (like Amazon). Get 100 free points when you enroll!
  • Hiking Trails: Research local hikes for a rewarding adventure that showcases beautiful views. Make sure to bring water and snacks!
  • Water Sports: If you’re near a beach, try paddleboarding, kayaking, or surfing for a unique workout.

Hotel Room Exercises Without a Gym

If your hotel has a gym, that’s great! If not, don’t worry—there are still plenty of ways to stay active and do strength training in your room:

  • Bodyweight Exercises: Push-ups, squats, lunges, and planks all require minimal space and are exercises to do on vacation. These are all great options for travel workouts with no equipment.
  • Online Workouts: Use fitness apps or streaming platforms for quick yoga or HIIT sessions right in your room.
  • Use Furniture: Get creative with your environment—perform tricep dips off a chair or step-ups on a low table.

Exercises for Active Transport

Ditch public transport or taxis whenever possible and choose to walk or bike instead as an active form of cross-training. This not only keeps you active but also allows you to immerse yourself in your surroundings:

  • Rent a Bike: Explore the coast or city streets at your own pace. And as a runner, finding an opportunity to cross-train on a bike is a bonus!
  • Walk Between Attractions: Instead of rideshare apps or public transportation, stroll to your next destination.
  • Take the Stairs: If you’re in a hotel, opt for the stairs over the elevator for a quick cardio boost. After finishing the Berlin Marathon, we opted for a cathedral with the best views of Berlin with no elevator. The pictures were worth it!

Explore Local Fitness Classes

Make your fitness routine a part of your cultural experience by joining a local fitness class.

  • Hotel Fitness Classes: Many resorts offer yoga sessions and make for the best travel workouts since they’re on the property.
  • Drop-in Gyms: Many gyms offer single-session rates for access to their gym for the day if you need access to a treadmill.
  • Use an Existing Membership: If your gym has locations at your destination, take advantage of visiting another studio. I’ve taken an Orangetheory in five states and it’s fun to visit other studios. Get a free Orangetheory Class, details here!

Stay Active While Traveling

Long flights or train rides don’t have to mean sitting still. Here are some tips to keep moving while in transit:

  • Stretch Regularly: Stand up and walk the aisle when it’s safe, and do some light stretching.
  • Seated Exercises: Perform ankle circles or seated stretches to keep your blood flowing. Also remember to wear your compression socks for continued blood flow on long flights.
  • Airport Activity: If you have a layover, look for opportunities to get extra steps between your gates or find a quiet corner to stretch.
