Discover the best winter skincare for runners to protect your skin during cold weather runs including moisturizing to proper sun protection.
When I was a new runner it didn’t even dawn on me that people could physically run in the winter. And it didn’t occur to me that winter skincare for runners was even a thing. The concept was probably one of the biggest mental challenges I’ve faced as a runner.

Can You Run Through Winter?
I’d run four marathons before I ran through my first calendar year. One winter our endurance training group had their Winter destination race in Huntington Beach and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to sign up. It gave me an opportunity to travel to California, visit my dad, and see friends. The concept of training in any temperature so we could run in the sun sounded intriguing. I volunteered to pace for the training group to hold me accountable to the miles, no matter the conditions.

Long Distance Running in Winter
It took me a season to figure out how to dress properly. I was so intensely focused on my layering, that I regularly forgot about how to care for my skin on the winter runs.
Cold winds, low humidity, and chilly temperatures can wreak havoc on your skin, especially during those long outdoor runs. If you’re searching for the best winter skin care products for runners, you’ve come to the right place.
I’ve now run through five winters and have experienced cold, wind and snow. I have tried a lot of different strategies for how to care for my skin while running outdoors in the winter.

Is Skincare Important for Winter?
Yes! Skin care is important year round for runners! The cold air creates dryness and you need to use creamier products to combat dryness. And even though you might not see as much of the sun, you still need to apply sunscreen on the skin that’s exposed to the elements. Your sun exposure is actually magnified by things like the reflection from the snow, which can increase risk for skin cancer and sun damage.
I’ve created a list of 10 essential winter skin care tips for runners to help you stay protected and keep your skin glowing all winter long. I’ve created a shopping list with all running skin care items I love!

How Can I Keep My Skin Hydrated Through Winter?
Winter skin care starts with hydrating! Staying hydrated is just as crucial in winter as in summer, even though you might not feel as thirsty or visibly sweat as much. Drink plenty of water and electrolytes throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out, giving it the moisture it needs to combat the dry, cold air. Hydration is one of the ways to reduce the signs of aging! I keep a 40-ounce cup (available in multiple colors) at my desk to drink plenty of water throughout the workday.
What is the Best Moisturizer for Winter Running?
Apply a moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp after a shower or run. This helps lock in moisture before it can evaporate in dry air. I switch to a moisture cream instead a lotion as part of my winter skincare routine. Look for a moisturizer with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which help maintain hydration levels and reduce the risk of fine lines. This moisturizing cream from CeraVe is a staple for me. It’s really thick and provides extra moisture!

How Do I Keep My Face Hydrated During Winter Runs?
When temperatures drop, lightweight lotions won’t be enough. Since your eyes are one area exposed no matter how cold it gets, switch to a richer, cream-based moisturizer that provides a protective layer against the elements. A good winter skincare product will protect your skin without feeling heavy or greasy during your run (you don’t want it to sweat in your eyes). I love this eye cream from It Cosmetics. It’s moisturize-rich and soothing. If you prefer an anti-aging eye cream, check out this Under Eye Cream from grace & stella. It helps add extra moisture, improve skin texture and prevents premature aging.

Do I Need to Wear Sunscreen in Winter?
There is evidence to support you still need sunscreen in the winter. UV rays can still damage your skin in the winter, especially when they reflect off snow. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before every run to protect against harmful rays. If you have a flex spend account (FSA), you can use you funds to purchase with tax-free dollars.

Summer vs Winter Skin Care for Runners
Remember that skin care for your hot and humid summer runs is just as essential in the winter! Necessary summer skincare tips like applying anti-chafe products in high-friction areas like your bra elastic and your inner arms, thighs and feet. This balm from Happy Curves goes on really smooth and will protect your skin from chafing. Your shoes might fit differently in the winter, so get fitted properly at your local running store to prevent blisters and irritation.

Best Ways to Hydrate Your Lips in Winter
Winter winds can leave your lips chapped and dry. Apply a nourishing, long-lasting lip balm before, during, and after your run. A lip balm with beeswax or shea butter will create a protective barrier against the cold. I am obsessed with Burt’s Bees lip products and I carry one in every bag!

Winter Face Wash for All Skin Types
Winter can make skin more sensitive, so switch to a gentle, hydrating cleanser that won’t strip your skin of its natural oils. Look for formulas that are sulfate-free and packed with hydrating ingredients like aloe vera.
This CeraVe hydrating cleanser is my year-round go-to. I love it washes off easily with no residue, keeps my skin feeling clean and helps balance my overall moisture.
Winter Skin Care Routines for Dry Skin
Bundle up with clothing designed for winter running to cover as much skin as possible. Stick to base layers, hats and socks made from merino wool since it’s thin, incredibly warm and wicks moisture. A gaiter, gloves, and thermal leggings will protect your skin from freezing winds. Stick to technical fabrics to help prevent chafing while keeping your skin comfortable and safe. I also recommend adding Aquaphor to your cheeks to protect your skin from the wind.

How to Exfoliate Your Winter Skin
Exfoliation is key to removing dead skin cells and letting your moisturizer penetrate better. But in winter, limit exfoliating to once a week to avoid irritation. Choose a gentle exfoliant or an exfoliating mitt that won’t be too harsh on your skin.

Best Habits for After a Winter Run
As soon as you finish your run, change into dry clothes (including your underwear)! While it might seem innocent, your body temperature can easily drop once you stop running in damp clothes. Consider packing a change of clothes if you have a place to change, even if you’re headed straight home. I also include a deodorant body wipe and hairbrush (I’m obsessed with this detanging brush from Unbrush) in my gym bag.
