When it comes to traveling for a race, the logistics of it can be stressful! Making sure you have everythingl you need for a smooth race day experience can be overwhelming. Luckily I’ve done this a few times and I’m ready to share my tips for a stress-free travel experience.

Best Travel Tips for Half Marathon Runners

In January I entered the New York Brooklyn Half Marathon (the NYRR one since there are apparently multiple Half Marathons in Brooklyn now?) lottery. I was still on a high from running the NYC Marathon in November and on the last day of the lottery I thought, what the hey?

A few weeks later when it was decision day I waited for most of a day for the lottery results. The results were posted incredibly late (like 7 pm Eastern time? Wild). As soon as I realized I was flying to New York City for another race, I needed to prep for traveling for another race. Luckily since I’ve done this a few times before, I have learned so much over the years about how to travel for a destination race. In this guide, I’m sharing my top five tips to ensure you have the smoothest travel experience for your next race.

Best Practices When Traveling for A Half Marathon

Traveling for a half marathon can be overwhelming! Not only are you sleeping in a different bed, you might not have access to everything you’re used to on your long runs. I’ve traveled for a few races over the years and have picked up a few tricks for race travels up my sleeves.

Half Marathon Packing Tips

When it comes to traveling for a race, essentially you’d bring everything you’d likely use for a training run in your suitcase. Since your space might be limited, you’ll want to make sure you’re packing your suitcase with the most essential items.

What to Bring to a Half Marathon

As part of your training program to run a half marathon, write out everything you’ll need on race day, starting from your head down to your toes. This helps me when it comes to planning the logistics of what I will carry on me for the race, as well as create a packing list for my half marathon.

You should lay out your clothes, fuel and gear for the long run the night before throughout the training season. This creates a good habit of doing it before the race and will help you remember to bring everything.

Next you’ll want to lay out everything you’ll need on race day before you pack. This will increase the likelihood of minimal race day emergencies. I usually take a picture with my items laid out to help me remember what was included. And when I say lay it all out, including your nutrition, body glide, race day glitter, lay all of it out on the bed on on the floor.

Packing For Air Travel to Your Half Marathon

Even if I get a free checked bag with my ticket with a United Card, I always include my race kit in my carry-on. While hauling extra stuff through the airport can be a pain, I’m always nervous something will go wrong and I won’t have my running shoes or singlet. I usually pack one large duffel bag and a small carry-on suitcase.

Are Packing Cubes Worth It?

In my option, yes! Get packing cubes that have multiple zippers to condense your clothes to make more space in your bag. I love using packing cubes to section off my race day gear to keep it all together and organized! I love BagSmart packing cubes to help organize my suitcase. It also helps with organizing my race kit by keeping everything together so unpacking when I arrive at my hotel is a breeze.

Bring your Running Nutrition from Home

Bring your running nutrition from home. Yes, you can probably buy nutrition at the expo, however, you may not find the right brand or flavors you need. It’s best to bring the nutrition you’ve been training with all season to ensure your body has the best chance for a smooth race. The tried and true rule of “Nothing New on Race Day” is kind of a downer but really important.

How to Prep the Day Before Your Half Marathon

Spend as little time on your feet the day before your race. While it’s tempting to explore a new destination when you first arrive, use your race as an opportunity to preview the area. You can always head back the day after and see key locations the day after. If there is an opportunity to take a bus or boat tour instead, this is a great chance to see a new pace while resting your legs.

Recovery Activities for After a Half Marathon

While it might be tempting to lay in bed after tackling a half marathon race, use the day after your race to loosen up by walking around. The distance of a half marathon is enough to make you stiff and sore after. Encourage yourself to get moving by taking in the sights and seeing the landscape you missed the day before the race. When I was in Austin for the half marathon, I made it over to the “I Love You So Much” mural and it was amazing to see it up close since I had run by it the day before.
