Discover the must-have items to pack in your travel carry-on bag for a stress-free journey.
If there is one thing that gives me anxiety about flying it is waiting to arrive at my destination to access something from my suitcase. Over the years, I’ve built a list of essential items to ensure I have the smoothest travel experience. And after taking several long-haul flights in the last year, I’ve started to refine my list.
What is a Carry-on Bag?
A carry-on bag is a piece of luggage you bring with you in the cabin of the airplane (or in train or bus) instead of checking it with your carrier. Your carry-on typical fits in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. It must pass an airport screening and the average size varies by carrier.

How to Pack a Carry-On Bag
While most airlines allow carry-on bags, the specific guidelines for size, weight, and number of bags can vary significantly. It’s essential to check your airline’s carry-on policy before packing to avoid unexpected fees or the inconvenience of having to check your bag at the gate.
How Many Bags Can You Bring on a Plane?
Some airlines allow a personal item, such as a backpack or purse, along with a standard carry-on, while others may have stricter limitations. Additionally, budget airlines often have more restrictive policies, requiring passengers to pay for larger carry-ons.
To ensure a smooth travel experience, review the dimensions and weight limits provided by your airline and measure your luggage to confirm it complies with their rules. For a list of my favorite travel bags, check out this travel bag guide!

How Should You Pack Running Items for a Destination Race?
If there is one tip every runner should know when traveling to a race, it’s to pack your race kit in your carry-on bag. If you want more information on this topic, check out this post.
How Many Travel Size Items Can I Bring?
When flying, you can bring travel-size liquids, gels, and aerosols in your carry-on bag, but they must adhere to the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. This means each container can hold no more than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters), and all containers must fit inside a single quart-sized, clear, resealable plastic bag.
You can bring as many travel-size items as you like, provided they all fit comfortably in the bag and the bag can be sealed. Keep in mind that this rule only applies to liquids, gels, and aerosols; solid items like bar soap or makeup powders are not subject to the same restrictions.
For checked luggage, these limits don’t apply, so you can pack larger containers if needed.

Best Accessories for Travel
Here is a list of 10 essential items I need in my carry-on bag.
Travel Hair Accessories: A Scrunchie or a Hair Tie
Nothing beats the comfort of pulling my hair up when I need to relax so having a hair tie or scrunchie, is a must-have in my carry-on. This microfiber scrunchie is incredibly soft and also absorbs moisture from damp hair.

Carry-on Travel Essentials
These items are on my absolute must-have for travel essentials. I bring them on every flight.
Bring Your Own Travel Snacks
A few years ago, Brian and I were flying home from Colorado and Brian and I encountered a snowstorm in late May. Our flight was canceled because there weren’t enough de-icers to get to our plane before our flight crew timed out. We ended up sleeping on the floor, and I had planned on buying snacks on the flight. Never again!
You can bring non-liquid food through security in your carry-on. I love having a combination of salty and sweet options like chips, almonds, or candy.
Pro Tip: These lemon almonds are incredible. You can find a few of my favorite treats here on Amazon.
Most Useful Travel Accessories
The Best Travel Neck Pillow
I’ve never been one to sleep on a plane unless I was exhausted, and even then, it’s usually light. I can never seem to find a comfortable position for my head. I discovered the Trtl neck pillow before our trip to Hawaii. I love its ergonomic design and how compact it is, taking up very little space in my bag. After using it, I ended up with the deepest sleep I’ve ever experienced on a flight, which almost never happens to me!
I love that it props my head in the exact place I need it to sleep upright, and it lies relatively flat in my bag. It also has a travel pouch to keep it clean while it’s in my bag.
Long Haul Carry On Essentials
When it comes to long-haul flights, you’re playing the long game! While you’re on your way to a far-off destination, you’re going to need a few extra things to keep you occupied and comfortable.
A Tablet (with Netflix Downloads)
I am pretty sure I only use my tablet for recipes and Netflix, but after 6 years, that’s all I can ask for. If anything, remember to download some TV programs on your phone for easy entertainment.
Noise-Canceling Headphones
I’ve had a pair of original AirPods for years, and I find them so much more comfortable than my AirPod Pros. When my original set died, I learned Apple updated the design to feel more like the original design. Find them here on Amazon.
Always Pack Your Medication With You
Pack your medication for your entire trip in your carry-on. While I would hope your bags are never misplaced, if they are, you’re going to still need your medication. I also include headache meds and decongestants since I have issues with my ears adjusting in flight.
Reusable Water Bottle
Not sure if this is a pro tip, but I always bring my empty emotional support water bottle through TSA and fill it in the terminal to save money on airport concessions. I recently learned you can put ice (as long as it’s not melted) in your water bottle for cold water on your flight. I tested it on my way home from Oklahoma this past weekend and had no issues.
My favorite water bottle is available here on Amazon. I love that it has a drinkable lid, stays cold, and holds 32oz of water.
Carry-On Essentials: Nice-to-Have Items
Pack a Pair of Sunglasses
Not that you’ll need them on the flight but you might want them to be easily accessible when you arrive. If you need a new pair, I bought these for our Hawaii trip earlier this year and they’re adorable.
Travel Accessories Organizer
Bring a pouch to organize your cords with a spare battery (or you can check out this organizer from Bagsmart). Make sure you pack the correct cords for all your electronic devices, unlike me on my trip to Oklahoma this past weekend (they were in my checked bag).
This cord is amazing because it covers most of my cord needs with USB-C, lightning cord, and micro USB cord options.
I also ordered a spare charging cord for my running watch so I never have to worry about missing step count data. If you have a Garmin 245, you can find spare charging cords here.
A Power Pack to Charge Your Devices
If you’re unable to charge your phone on a flight or in the airport terminal, having an emergency battery is key. It’s also nice to find one that’s relatively light since a heavy bag can be a lot when carrying your stuff through an airport. This Anker battery weighs one pound and can charge an iPhone 14 4.3 times! It also has options for different charging cords and can charge a low battery fairly quickly.
An Honorable Mention for Flights: Plastic Baggies
If you travel through an airport lounge: plastic bags! Use them for bringing snacks with you on the plane.
