Why Marathon Nails Deserve a Spot on Your Race Weekend Checklist

Race prep isn’t only about race day logistics and your training plan! It’s also about celebrating the journey to the start line and feeling your best on race day. Getting a marathon manicure can complete your race day look!

A fresh marathon manicure is:

  • A Confidence Boost: Having cute nail art is the extra detail can make you feel polished, put-together, and ready to tackle 26.2.
  • A Fun Tradition: Many runners choose a new nail design for each race inspired by the city! It’s a fun tradition that’s fun to share!
  • A Subtle Memory Keeper: Every time you look at your nails during the race (and trust me, you will), you’ll remember the miles it took to get there.

Running Nail Designs: Ideas and Inspiration for Every Runner

No matter your style, bold and themed or minimal and classic, there’s a marathon nail look to match your vibe. Here are a few favorites to inspire your next manicure!

City-Themed Nail Art for World Majors

Show your racing nail art with designs inspired by these iconic courses part of the World Marathon Majors. These marathon race day nail ideas are based on the flair of each location with nods to the local culture.

Getting a marathon manicure for a big city race is the perfect race day nails aesthetic.

Think of inspired art designs for these iconic cities!

Chicago Marathon Nail Ideas

Get Chicago Marathon Nails that highlight the Second City designs inspired by the Chicago flag, a Chicago hot dog, or lines featuring colors from the Chicago “L” train lines (pink, green, red, yellow, blue, orange, purple, and brown). You’ll especially want to have a cute nail design if Chicago is your first World Marathon Major! The Windy City offers so many fun Chicago-themed nail design options!

NYC Marathon Nail Inspiration

For New York-inspired manicures, include iconic NYC accents like an apple, Lady Liberty, a skyline, hot dog or a yellow cab. You could also include designs for your NYC Marathon nails with the bridges (there are six of them on the course).

London Marathon Manicure Ideas

Red, white, and blue with Union Jack accents for UK flag nails or Big Ben silhouettes are the perfect nod as part of your London marathon nails. Another option is to pick ombre nails with the London Marathon brand colors (purples, pinks, and orange) for a London-themed nail design.

Berlin Marathon Nail Ideas

Get the Berlin Bear or pretzel-themed nails! I also love a checkered patterned of the Bavarian flag (especially if you’re going to Oktoberfest after the race). Another Berlin-themed design could incorporate the colors of the German flag. Whatever you decide for your Berlin Marathon nails, the options for this European marathon are really fun. Prost!

Tokyo Marathon Nail Ideas

Think nail art with minimalist cityscapes for Tokyo Marathon nails! You could create a Tokyo Marathon nail design with cherry blossoms, the Tokyo Marathon brand colors, or Japanese flag-inspired designs.

Boston Marathon Manicure Nail Designs

Heading to Boston? Celebrate in a big way with a Boston Marathon manicure! Whether you are running Boston on a BQ or running Boston for charity, go for the blue and yellow colors from the B.A.A or include a unicorn as a nod to Spike, the Boston Marathon mascot!

Running Nail Art: Finish Line Flair

Commemorate your marathon with nail art that includes nods to the race or the overall distance.

Include race day features with the following:

  • Your bib number or your goal race distance as accent nails like 26.2 or 13.1.
  • A mini finish line banner across one accent nail.
  • Accent gems like diamonds to add sparkle.
  • A little tiny heart on each nail.
  • A motivational word like “STRONG” or “RUN” to encourage you mid-race.
  • Sparkle with a bit of glitter nail polish on your “party nail” (the ring finger) for a little pizazz!

Pro Tip: For a simple race day design, pick a color palette that complements your race-day outfit. It’ll look amazing in finish-line photos!

Quick and Easy Marathon Manicure Options

If race week is hectic (and let’s be real, it usually is), here are a few quick options! Try these time-saving alternatives:

  • Self-Adhesive Nail Wraps: These marathon nail art stickers go on in minutes and last up to 10 days.
  • Press-On Nails: Today’s versions look professional and stay put even through a sweaty race weekend. Check out some of my favorite brands here.
  • No-Chip Polish: These are perfect for lasting over time (especially if you’re traveling and want no fuss). You can get this done at a salon, but you don’t have to wait for the polish to dry.

Press-On Nail Favorites

I tested out dozens of press-on nail kits and I fell in love with this manicure style! Read my press-on nail brand review here and see below for more of my press-on nail kit favorites!

How to Make Your Marathon Manicure Last Through 26.2 Miles

You’ve spent time perfecting your race-day look; don’t let your nails chip before the post-race photos with your medal! A few pro tips to make your manicure last longer:

  • Prep your nails well. Clean, file, and buff before applying polish or wraps. Push back your cuticles for a clean nail bed.
  • Use a sticky base coat. It helps polish or wraps adhere better and stay longer.
  • Seal with a strong top coat. Reapply every few days to keep nails shiny and chip-free.
  • Avoid soaking your hands in water. The water can lift polish or wraps prematurely!
