If you’re ready to learn how to do your own nails at home, let’s dive in.

What Do Press-on Nails Have to Do With Running?

This is a great question! Over the years I’ve noticed that after spending months training for a marathon, I want to feel my best on race day. Getting my nails done for a race is one way to feel my best and treat myself to something special for the hard work I’ve put in. Plus, if I am traveling for a race, getting a manicure is part of my vacation planning.

Why Press-On Nails Are a Game-Changer

If you’ve never applied press-on nails before (or were like me and tried years ago with frustrating results), this guide will walk you through every step of the way. With the proper prep and application, your nails will look flawless and last for several weeks!

Before we get to the how-to, here’s why they’re making a comeback.

  • Budget-Friendly: A set costs a fraction of a salon manicure. Plus it’s nice you can swap them out as frequently as you’d prefer! Plus they’re easy to find at drugstores!
  • Quick Results: You can get a polished look in a fraction of the time (around 30 minutes). If you’re crunched for time during marathon week and want to have a marathon manicure for your marathon race day, it’s a lifesaver!
  • Damage Control: When applied and removed correctly, they’re gentler on your natural nails than acrylics or gels.
  • Variety: Swap designs and nail shapes easily depending on the occasion!
  • Travel-Friendly: Perfect for last-minute trips, weddings, or events when you don’t have time for the salon. Apply press-on nails from home, your hotel or even on a road trip.

What You’ll Need for Salon-Perfect Press-on Nails

Over the last few months, I found myself down a rabbit hole, testing different nail products for this post. I tried several press-on nail brands, nail glues and application steps.

Most press-on nail kits include the essentials, but here’s a complete list so you’re fully prepared.

Press-on Nail Types

Make sure you choose a size/shape that suits your lifestyle. If you’re not used to having nails, adding long nails may not be the best option. The nice thing is that most brands allow you to trim them and file them like real nails.

Nail brands come in different styles, perfect for any occasion. Press-on nails come in various lengths from short to extra long. They also have different shapes, such as:

  • Square Nails: Nails cut straight across with a flat edge and sharper corners.
  • Squoval Nails: Squoval nails are similar to the square shape with a flat tip but with rounded edges.
  • Oval Nails: This shape has the width of the square nails with soft edges and a slightly rounded tip.
  • Rounded Nails: This is classic shape has a natural look with soft edges and a more rounded tip.
  • Almond Nails: Similar to oval nails but with a point at the tip.
  • Pointed Nails: Shorter nails with a very sharp tip.
  • Stiletto Nails: Long, narrow nails with a very sharp tip.
  • Coffin Nails: Long narrow nails with a flat tip instead of a point.

What You’ll Need to Apply a Press-on Manicure

Here are the items needed to apply press-on nails. Nail prep items noted with * are usually included in the press-on nail kits. Check the package, but you likely won’t need to include these separately.

  • Nail glue for press-on nails or adhesive tabs*
  • Nail file or buffer*
  • Cuticle pusher*
  • Nail clippers
  • Rubbing alcohol or alcohol prep wipes*
  • Small scissors (optional, for trimming adhesive tabs)
  • Hand lotion or cuticle oil (for after press-on nail application)

Pro Tip: If your kit doesn’t include nail glue (honestly, most kits include glue), invest in a strong, fast-drying nail glue for longer wear.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply Press-On Nails

Here is the step-by-step guide to create your best press-on nail manicure! I’ve also created an Amazon shopping list with my manicure nail favorites so you can get a great manicure at home.

Press-on Nails Application Steps

Here is a step-by-step guide for how to put on press-on nails. This will walk you through how to prep your nails for press-ons. The nail prep is the most important step, so follow these steps carefully.

Step 1: Prep Your Natural Nails

The key to long-lasting press-ons is starting with a clean, dry nail bed. Nail prep is essential for long-lasting press-on nail application.

  1. Remove old polish with nail polish remover.
  2. Trim and shape your natural nails to prevent them from peeking under the press-on. If your natural nails are a shorter length, this isn’t a problem! Having enough nail surface for the nail to attach to is helpful for keeping them on longer (but not mandatory).
  3. Remove any excessive cuticles using a cuticle remover. Use Sally Hansen cuticle remover to soften the cuticles for easy removal.
  4. I apply the gel on my nail bed, let it set for about a minute before I use a pusher to push my cuticles back using a cuticle pusher. This step gives the nail a better surface to adhere to.
  5. Lightly buff the surface of each nail to remove shine. Roughing up the surface allows for better application over a smooth surface.
  6. Rinse your hands with water and dry them with a towel.
  7. Clean each nail with rubbing alcohol or nail prep wipes to remove oils and nail dust.

Pro Tip: Skipping prep is the #1 reason press-ons pop off early.

Step 2: Choose Your Press-on Nail Sizes

Fit the nail over your natural nail to determine which size best fits each finger. Most nail sets come with 12-15 pairs to ensure you get your perfect fit.

Lay out the press-ons on a flat surface in order from thumb to pinky for each hand.

If a nail is too big, try another size or gently file the sides of the press-on nail to fit your nail bed. A snug fit is essential for comfort and staying power.

Step 3: Apply Nail Glue for Press-ons

You have two options for adhering a fresh nail set.

  • Nail Glue: For 1–2+ weeks of wear.
  • Adhesive Tabs: For 5-14 days of wear.

For Glue Application for Press-on Nails

  1. Rub the inside of the press-on nail with acetone on a Q-tip to rough up the nail application surface.
  2. Apply a thin layer of glue to your natural nail and make sure the glue is applied with even coverage on the entire nail bed, including the edges.
  3. Press the nail down at a 45-degree angle starting from the cuticle, then press firmly for 30-60 seconds.

How to Apply Adhesive Tabs for Nails

  1. Peel off the film from the back of the nail, then press the press-on nail at a 45-degree angle at the cuticle.
  2. Press firmly for 10–15 seconds.

Step 4: Shape the Nail and Finish

Most press-ons come pre-shaped, but you can file or shape them with a nail file like natural nails.

  • File the tips for a smoother finish.
  • Shorten them if they feel too long for your lifestyle. Clip them with nail clippers and file the edges with a buffing block or a nail file. I also trim and file them after about a week, when they start to grow out.

How to Make Press-On Nails Last Longer

  • Avoid soaking your hands in hot water for the first 2–3 hours as the glue hardens. I find it easier to put on press-on nails before bed so the glue can rest after putting the nails on.
  • Wear gloves when doing dishes or cleaning.
  • Keep a small tube of glue in your bag for emergencies. I usually bring the little glue that comes in the kit.

How to Remove Press-On Nails

Gentle reminder to never peel off press-ons!  Removing your press-on nails incorrectly can damage layers of your natural nail.

How to Remove Press-On Nail Glue

  1. Soak nails in warm soapy water for 10–15 minutes.
  2. Gently lift from the sides using a cuticle stick and add a few drops of the Glamnetic press-on nail remover between the nail and my natural nail. Let it sit for 5-7 minutes and try lifting the nail off. For stubborn sections, repeat this step until the nail comes off.
  3. If needed, use acetone to dissolve glue that’s stuck to your nail.

How to Remove Nail Adhesive Tabs

  1. Soak in warm, soapy water for a few minutes.
  2. Slide a cuticle stick underneath to lift them off.
  3. Use acetone to remove any glue adhesive.

Once the nails are removed, use a buffing block to buff the nail bed. Add a little nail oil to the cuticle (I love OPI Nail & Cuticle Oil).

Common Press-On Nail Mistakes to Avoid

I’m a true believer that proper nail prep is necessary to ensure your manicure lasts for several days. Here are some things to avoid when applying press-ons.

  • Skipping Prep: Oils and residue if left on the nail before applying the adhesive, will cause your nail to lift. Wipe your nails clean with an alcohol wipe before applying the nail.
  • Using Too Much Glue: While it might seem like more is better, too much glue can cause air bubbles or overflow.
  • Wrong Size Nails: Oversized nails lift more easily since there could be an overlap on the skin or areas prone to lifting.
  • Not Sealing the Edges: Press firmly when applying the nail, especially around cuticles and tips. Ensure you’re giving the whole nail an even coat of glue when applying your nail.

Quick FAQ on DIY Press-On Nails

How long do press-on nails last?

With glue, press-on nails should last around 2 weeks! You may have to reapply one or two if they need to be reattached. With tab/sticker nails, your manicure can last a few days or over a week!

Can I reuse press-on nails?

Yes, you can reuse them if you remove them carefully and clean off the glue. If you use a nail glue remover, it will likely not be an ideal option. If a nail falls off, use acetone to remove the extra glue from the inside of the press-on before applying new glue to reattach.

Will press-on nails damage my natural nails?

Press-on nails will not damage your natural nails if you prep and remove them correctly! Be gentle when removing your press-on nails and be gentle not to peel them off your nail bed.

To remove your press-on nails: Soak your nails in warm water mixed with olive oil and dish soap to weaken the glue. Use a cuticle stick to gently lift the press-on nail off your natural nail and repeat if the glue is not releasing the press-on nail.
