How to Use ChatGPT for a Fitness Goal

This post will show you how to use AI prompts to make your running life easier. Let’s dive into how to use this tool effectively for your running journey or to support your workout plan.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT (offered by OpenAI) is an AI-powered tool that acts like your ultra-efficient assistant. Need advice, a joke, ideas, creating an image, inspiration or help planning your weekly meals? ChatGPT can offer support for that and more. It’s like having a non-judgmental, knowledgeable friend who’s available 24/7 to brainstorm, organize, and inspire. While it’s a great resource for runners, it’s important to use it in the right way to get the most benefit.

How to Use ChatGPT

Even though ChatGPT is becoming a really popular resource, let’s step back and clarify where to find it and how to use it. ChatGPT offers two versions: the free option and the Pro subscription. You can access it from their website, chatgpt.com, and they also have an app. You can use it without creating an account, but if you want to access your chat history, you’ll want to sign up to chat with the system.

On the site, there is a search bar and you can use this tool to ask questions, which it pulls from its database and the internet. Based on the information you provide in the search bar (known as a prompt), the system will reply with an answer. You can ask follow-up questions and have a conversation. While it seems a little unreal, it is helpful for getting inspiration or discovering another perspective.

How to Write ChatGPT Prompts

Including the right amount of information is key to writing a good prompt. When writing an AI prompt, you should consider the following when messaging ChatGPT.

  • Be Specific: The more detail you can include to guide the AI, the closer you’ll get to a response that’s in line with your topic.
  • Provide Context: The ChatGPT might need a little background or guidance when it comes to the intent of the prompt. What point-of-view would you like it to consider? What is the audience the information will support? The more detail you can provide, the better.
  • Be a Little Bossy: Tell the ChatGPT exactly what you’d like it to do. You can also ask it to ask you questions for understanding before you get started. Something like, “Is there anything you need to know before we get started?” It may ask you a few follow-up questions to close the gap if the system is unsure the overall goal.
  • Ask Follow-Up Questions: If you don’t get a response related to the topic, ask it follow-up questions or pivot your approach. Sometimes the first answer isn’t the best answer and you need to coach it.

Why You Shouldn’t Use ChatGPT for a Training Program

While it might seem logical to build a training plan with ChatGPT or another AI tool, it might not be your best option in the long run. ChatGPT is fantastic for advice and curating ideas, but it’s not a substitute for professional coaching or personalized training plans.

Here’s why you should seek athletic advice from a human:

  1. Accuracy Matters: AI lacks an understanding of key pieces of your fitness level, running history, and injury risk. An AI plan may not align your workout plan with your current fitness needs and it’s important to talk to a licensed professional for guidance.
  2. Lack of Adjustability: Unlike a coach, ChatGPT can’t adjust your plan dynamically based your current circumstances. If you get injured, ChatGPT can’t properly assess the best outcome for what you need in the moment.
  3. Risk of Overtraining or Undertraining: An AI-generated plan might push too hard or not challenge you enough, both of which can derail your goals or lead to injury. For example, since it doesn’t understand your current fitness level, it could write a plan with too many run days per week and minimize the strength aspect.

Things to Consider With ChatGPT Running Tips

ChatGPT should never replace the expertise of a coach or your body’s cues when it comes to training. Also ChatGPT compiles it’s information from what it deems to be the best source, but it could merge data based on multiple experience levels, which could cause you to overtrain. Instead of relying on ChatGPT for a full training plan, use it to enhance your existing one by asking for insights on specific workout plan, tips for staying motivated, or tools for tracking your progress.

Note: Never put personal or confidential information into ChatGPT!

Use ChatGPT for Automating Your Meal Prep

I’ve started using ChatGPT to automate my meal planning and I had to share it. When I say this option is LIFE CHANGING, I am serious! Personally I dislike meal planning and grocery shopping. Automating meal prep is a game-changer for runners juggling training with everything else. ChatGPT can help you simplify the process by creating meal plans and consolidating ingredients into a shopping list. Here’s how:

Prompts for Meal Planning

This is one of the prompts where getting specific can really go a long way. I started using ChatGPT to not only suggest recipe options but to roll the list together in a shopping list when I go to the grocery store. Each week I copy and paste the recipe and grocery list into a Google doc to reference which ingredients are used in each meal.

Use this as a starting prompt:

  • Create a weekly meal plan for a runner training for a half marathon, including breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks. Focus on a good balance of protein, fiber and carbs.”

To expand this prompt, get specific based on the following:

  • Note where you grocery shop so it includes ingredients the store will likely carry (if you shop at Aldi, I hope you feel me on this one)
  • Inlcude your ideal budget for the week so the recipes provided are within your expected spend.
  • Number of people to shop for (include how many adults and children so you get the proper portions)
  • Any dietary restrictions or allergens
  • Foods you like and foods you avoid
  • Types of preparation methods (easy dinners, grilled options, slow cooker meals) so you can manage your expectations for the cooking process

Additional ChatGPT prompts you could also use for Meal Prep

If you’re looking for a little variety in your meal prep, use ChatGPT to help create a little variety in your meal planning.

  • “Give me three recovery smoothie recipes with simple ingredients.”
  • “Plan a carb-loading dinner for the night before a long run.”
  • “I have these 4 random ingredients in my fridge: [list them out]. What can I make with this?”

Prompts for Grocery Shopping List Organization

Using ChatGPT for meal planning can be a huge timesaver! You can use an AI prompt to help you budget your grocery budget and plan your grocery list!

  • “Make a grocery shopping list based on these meals you suggested”
    • I’ve also included notes like, “Please use the chili recipe from this food blog in my ingredient list.”
    • I remind it where I am planning on shopping so it can provide alternative options for items the store may not carry. Sometimes it offers suggestions like marinara for pesto sauce or which steak to buy if they don’t have the suggested cut.
    • You can also request cost-saving substitutions for these ingredients: [insert specific items] if you need alternatives.
  • You can add notes like, group my grocery list into categories like produce, proteins, and pantry items for easier shopping.

By using ChatGPT for meal prep, you’ll not only save time but also fuel your training more effectively.
